This Manifesto of the Child in Canada is a statement of the Child in Church and Culture Partnership regarding the children who are in our midst as both present treasure and future hope for the continuance of the gospel to the next generations.

This Manifesto recognizes the span of childhood to be from conception to 14 years of age.

The Partnership is an advocate for children in Canada regardless of their context, and a resource hub for Christian groups and individuals who work with children in Canada to share their resources, experience and insight in order that together they may accomplish more than what they can do alone.

The Child in Church and Culture Partnership affirms, values and advocates for the following:

§That the Holy Scriptures, as originally given by God, are divinely inspired, infallible, entirely trustworthy, and constitute the only supreme authority in all matters of faith and conduct. Our advocacy for children in church and culture is guided by the wisdom and authority of Scripture.

§Biblical literacy among children.

§That every individual and ministry strives to create environments in which children are heard, challenged and given opportunities to reach their God-given potential, and equipped to respond to the contexts they are in.

§Children are people made in the image of God, are recipients of His unconditional love, and are ordained by God to specific roles. God desires each child to receive His offer of salvation through Jesus Christ.

§Children have a distinct place in, and value to, every generation and amongst the generations.  We cherish the children in our midst, reminded that Jesus used children as models to teach adults. The healthy and holistic development of children is to be a priority of the church and the community.

§The inherent vulnerability of children and our responsibility to protect them from spiritual, physical, emotional, mental and social harm, not to shelter them but to release and empower them.

§The right of children to be heard, and to have opportunity to grow in leadership and to provide contribution in the exercise of God's mission.

§Children are a gift and trust given to parents for holistic formation that they might grow in wisdom and stature and in favour with God and men (Luke 2:52).  Parents have a God-given responsibility to be their child's primary leader, teacher and nurturer in every sphere of life (spiritual, physical, emotional, social, academic, relational, moral, ethical, and practical life skills and competencies).

For the sake of children in Canada, we call all Christians to:

§Consistently act toward the children in our midst with mutual respect and trust, while engaging, encouraging, instructing, correcting, training, and providing for them in a spirit of generosity, wisdom, gentle humility and abundant grace.

§Encourage children to see and hear God in new ways and give them freedom to respond as they believe God has asked.

§Encourage the pursuit of succession of the faith over the success of achievements.

§Participate in the efforts of the broader faith community to intentionally evangelize, disciple and advocate for all children regardless of personal context and circumstances as a demonstration of the Kingdom of God as revealed in Jesus Christ who said that the Kingdom “belongs to such as these”.

§Give children opportunities to speak and lead now as essential links in their journey to being the future leaders of our churches and culture.

§Meet the social justice needs of children while affirming that the most humanitarian thing we can do is introduce them to Jesus Christ as Lord, Saviour and Friend.
